Can real-time strategy actually work on a phone?

Real-time strategy grew up on mouse and keyboard, and for a long time mobile versions were painful — tiny buttons, misclicks, camera fights. But the touch-native ones are starting to change my mind.

Ironhold Command is the clearest example I've played lately. Everything is built around gestures: drag to place units, tap to redirect, pinch to zoom out. There's no borrowed PC interface fighting your thumbs. It feels like it was designed for the device instead of squeezed onto it.

The trick, I think, is scale. Touch RTS works best when the maps are compact and the decisions are dense rather than sprawling. You're not managing a hundred units across a huge map — you're solving a tight tactical puzzle a few units at a time.

If you bounced off mobile strategy years ago, it's worth another look. The genre finally figured out that phones need their own design, not hand-me-downs.
